Sage Yajnavalkya announces that he is about to renounce householder’s life and he would like to divide his wealth between his two wives. The first wife, more spiritually oriented, questions whether the entire wealth of the world would make her immortal. Yajnavalkya replies that she would be rich but wealth cannot make her immortal! She wonders of what use wealth can be that cannot make her immortal! Yajnavalkya asks her to come and sit down and reflect on what he explains!
Yajnavalkya started by saying that “ It is not for the sake of the husband that the husband is dear, but for the sake of the Self is a husband dear.It is not for the sake of the wife that the wife is dear, but for the sake of the Self is a wife dear. The wife is dear for the sake of the Self in her!
It is not for the sake of the sons that the sons are dear, but for the sake of the Self are the sons dear.
Yajnavalkya continued and said that it is not for the sake of the wealth that the wealth is dear but for the sake of the Self is wealth dear! Also, it is not for the sake of the Gods that the Gods are dear but for the sake of the Self are the Gods dear! Everything is dear just for the sake of Self!
Yajnavalkya instructs her that the Self should be meditated in everything! “ It should be seen, heard of, reflected on and meditated upon.”
When this is understood all is known!
